You don’t sound crazy, you sound like you’re ignorant about two very, very, very, very important things: asymptomatic carriers and herd immunity.
If we lived in a world where absolutely everyone could be and was vaccinated unless they made the adult choice otherwise, then you know what? I’d say that while I thought it was a stupid fucking risk, go ahead. Take your chances with horrific diseases for absolutely no good reason. It’s also your adult right to go leaping off a cliff with a homemade parachute and seeing what happens.
But that’s not the case. See, there’s a significant number of people who medically cannot be vaccinated. Some of them are allergic. Most of them have some kind of problem with their immune system or are not yet old enough to be vaccinated. We’re talking newborn babies, people with serious chronic diseases, the very old whose vaccinations may have worn off or who may have not been vaccinated because that shit wasn’t invented yet and are now too fragile, the very poor who don’t have access to basic health care, pediatric transplant recipients, some pregnant women, etc. It pretty much looks like a checklist of the kind of people that are so vulnerable, if you’re a writer, you can create an instant unforgivable villain by having a character hurt one of them.
Congratulations, if you’re running around willfully unvaccinated, you’re that supervillain. Because you can be CARRYING things that would kill all of them in slow, horrible, mutilatory ways without ever being sick yourself. You can feel great and healthy and never have a sick day in your life and be an asymptomatic carrier of measles and coo over your friend’s newborn and fucking kill them. Seriously, it is not any form of exaggeration to say that the only responsible way to be an unvaccinated-by-choice adult in modern society is to ensure that you never have any potentially contagious contact with anyone, because you don’t know who is and isn’t medically vulnerable or your own carrier status.
And if enough people are going around unvaccinated, you lose what’s called herd immunity. I want you to imagine that you’ve got a metal ball in a metal container. Electrify the container. Electrifies the ball, right? That’s a vulnerable person in a contagious environment. Now fill the container with rubber balls, with that one metal ball somewhere in the middle. They insulate the metal ball, and it doesn’t get electrified. That’s herd immunity. That’s how vaccines keep people who can’t get vaccines safe.
Now put a whole bunch more metal balls in with those rubber ones. Those additional metal balls, of course, being willfully unvaccinated adults having potentially contagious contact with society. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzt.
What you think you’re doing is playing Russian Roulette alone. What you’re actually doing is playing Russian Roulette…but firing the gun not only at yourself, but at every single unvaccinated person you ever encounter, who are mostly exactly the kind of people you would be most horrified to accidentally shoot.
